Artist Statement

My work holds what remains after language reaches its limits.

Painting is a way of staying with the essence that cannot be spoken.

나의 작업은 언어가 한계에 도달한 후 남는 것을 담고 있습니다.

그림은 말로 표현할 수 없는 본질과 함께 머무르는 방법입니다.

Biography

Narhana (born Byun Gunyoung in 1976) is a visual artist and author based in Seoul.
Working primarily with abstraction, his practice engages with structures and flows beneath surface reality.

An autodidact, Narhana has developed a distinctive visual language informed by long-term engagement with philosophy, meditation, and writing. Publications include Mandala Coloring Meditation (2015) and Spiral of Evolution (2023).

In 2025, Narhana received recognition including an Official Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Art Prize, an Award of Merit at the JoongAng Painting Exhibition, and an Honorable Mention at the Seoul International Art Prize Exhibition. The same year, they participated in several exhibitions, including a group show at Galerie 89 in Paris.

His practice is situated at the intersection of Eastern philosophical thought and Western abstract art.

나르하나(Narhana, 본명 변건영)는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 시각예술가이자 저술가이다. 추상 회화를 중심으로 표면 아래에 지속되는 구조와 흐름에 주목하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.

독학으로 작업 세계를 구축해왔으며, 철학적 사유와 명상, 글쓰기에 대한 오랜 탐구가 시각 언어 형성의 배경이 된다. 2015년 『만다라 색칠 명상』, 2023년 『진화의 나선』을 출간했다.

2025년 룩셈부르크 아트 프라이즈 공식 인증을 비롯해 중앙미술대전 특선, 서울국제미술대상전 입선 등을 수상했다. 같은 해 파리 Galerie 89에서의 그룹전을 포함한 여러 전시에 참여했다.

그의 작업은 동양 철학적 사유와 서양 추상미술의 맥락이 교차하는 지점에 위치한다.
